Biography

Amie Vanderford
Memphis, Tennessee

Exhibits and Awards

Amie was born in Miami and has since lived in Lakenheath, Madrid, Kaiserslatern, Las Vegas, Boston, The District of Columbia, Tucson, San Jose, San Francisco, and most recently, Memphis, TN. After graduating from The American University, she worked in the print industry and the computer industry, but is now on her way to making photography her primary means of income.

Her interest in photography started with watching her father - an Air Force pilot - take pictures. Her father used a Canon AE-1 Program, and focused on landscape photography. Amie decided that she could take photos at least as well as he did, and she spent some time documenting the landscapes of Europe with a Polaroid at age eleven. Landscapes are difficult to capture nicely with a Polaroid, but she managed to take a few noteworthy photographs, including one that she took of the "Eagle's Nest" in Germany. A few years later, after saving all of her babysitting money, she bought her first SLR: a Canon AE-1 Program, like her father's.

She became very active in photography throughout high school, serving as photo editor for her school yearbook and entering competitions. Her involvement in photography waned for a few years after college, but the passion was always there, nagging her. Her involvement in photography usually related to how many other commitments she had in her life, and during those years there was often not enough time for everything. It was during those years that she realized that by putting off the one thing that she loved more than anything else, she was losing a very important part of herself. Fortunately, this was the wake up call she needed. Over the past two years, she has been shooting more and is currently working to expand her boundaries and break her self-imposed limitations.

While little in Amie's life is constant, photography is the one thing that she always comes back to. It is what keeps her going.
